From Munich to Paris, and from Berlin to Athens, these startups harness artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, advanced robotics, and digital twin technologies to offer solutions that promise to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in defence operations. Their efforts are not isolated to mere technological demonstrations but are integral to the strategic operations of defence forces and security agencies worldwide.
For this article, we dove into this slightly controversial, but dynamic sector to curate a list of 10 promising startups that are setting new standards in defence technology, driving innovation, and contributing to a (hopefully) safer, more secure world.
Aleet: Lublin-based Aleet develops sophisticated systems including proprietary digital twin technology for fleet operational planning and AI-driven routing optimisation, serving multiple sectors like e-commerce and defence. Founded in 2018, the Polish startup so far has raised about €1.4 million in funding.
ARX: Munich-based ARX is a defence technology company that specializes in developing autonomous unmanned systems and sensors for the European defence sector. Their dual-use unmanned ground systems and sensors assist NATO armies and civilian first responders in tackling their most challenging problems. Founded in 2021, they have secured roughly €1.1 million till date.
BforeAI: Montpellier-based BforeAI focuses on predictive attack intelligence and Digital Risk Protection Services, using behavioural AI to transform cyber defence. Recognised by Gartner and awarded in the FinTech Innovation Lab New York, they provide swift defence against online fraud. Founded in 2020, they have raised €17.8 million in funding.
Comand AI: Paris-based Command AI empowers defence forces with decision-making and operational capabilities. They combine deep experience in the defence sector with world-class design and tech expertise, delivering next-generation AI-powered capabilities for the command and control of defence operations. Founded in 2023, the French startup has secured about €3 million in venture capital.
HarfangLab: Paris-based HarfangLab provides advanced Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solutions with five detection engines, including signature, IOC, AI, behavioral, and ransomware-specific engines. They emphasize resilient detection, agent self-protection, and driver verification. Founded in 2018, they have raised €30 million.
Helsing: Berlin-based Helsing creates AI-powered military solutions and components, with a platform that combines data from multiple sensors for real-time battlefield intelligence. Founded in 2021, they have raised over €311 million aiming to protect democracies through advanced software and artificial intelligence.
Lambda Automata: Athens-based Lambda Automata develops autonomous surveillance and defense systems for real-time, analyst-grade intelligence in challenging environments. Their technology aims to protects European democracies by monitoring borders, forests, and infrastructure. Founded in 2021, so far they have secured €6 million.
Orbotix: Brasov-based Orbotix specialises in autonomous drones and robotics, designing equipment for government and defence industries. Their OROS AI solution provides comprehensive threat detection and autonomous target acquisition, ensuring precision and rapid responses to armored vehicle threats. Founded in 2023, they have raised €500k.
21strategies: Munich-based 21strategies is a B2B deep tech research and operations company that supports organisations in making smarter decisions under uncertainty by building and operating Enterprise AI for real-life situations. To grow profitably, they develop strategic partnerships leveraging ecosystem expertise with Enterprise AI. Founded in 2020, they have raised €3.3 million for their initiatives.
Blackshark.ai: A Graz-based startup which processes petabytes of satellite imagery in hours, and it detects and segments objects, roads, vegetation, and other infrastructure on the surface of the planet without human intervention. This semantic information is then used to create a comprehensive 3D digital representation of the world. Blackshark recently closed it’s Series A round, totalling $35 million.
