Maastricht, The Netherlands-based Mosa Meat, a company specialised in cultured beef, announced on Tuesday that it has secured €40M in an oversubscribed funding round led by Lowercarbon Capital and M Ventures.
Among the investors are new government-funded parties, such as Invest-NL, LIOF, and the Limburgs Energie Fonds (LEF).
The round also witnessed new partners with a background in the conventional meat sector, including PHW Group, one of Europe’s largest poultry producers. Additionally, XO Ventures, Doux Investments, and more new partners also joined existing investors.
The Dutch company will use the funds to further scale up production processes and prepare for market launch.
The announcement comes seven months after achieving B Corp certification, becoming the first cultured meat company worldwide to earn this distinction.
Maarten Bosch, CEO of Mosa Meat, says, “The macroeconomic situation has deteriorated over the past two years, bringing challenges for our entire industry. It has made us even more strategic and focused on achieving our mission. Therefore, we are pleased and honoured to welcome both public parties and conventional meat producers as new partners and investors.”
Currently, the Dutch company is preparing its first formal tastings of cultured beef in the Netherlands.
“In an increasingly polarising environment, we choose to connect and collaborate, building a future where cultured beef is a real choice for consumers and one of the complementary solutions to combat the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. Organising our food system so that we can continue to produce good food for a growing global population without irreparably damaging the planet in the process is a massive challenge that will require a good number of people and organisations to work together,” adds Bosch.
Mosa Meat: Producing beef with 100% renewable energy
Founded in 2016 by Mark Post and Peter Verstrate, and led by CEO Maarten Bosch, Mosa Meat is a foodtech company that is on a mission to transform beef production.
The founder introduced the world’s first cultured beef burger in 2013 by growing it naturally from a cow’s cells.
The company is expanding its capabilities to produce the same beef people love in a way that’s better for people, animals, and the planet.
The Dutch company is committed to addressing climate and sustainability issues by producing beef with 100 per cent renewable energy.
Independent research indicates that their cultured beef production can reduce climate impact, air pollution, land usage, and water consumption compared to traditional industrial beef production.
Additionally, this method allows for land repurposing for regenerative agriculture and habitat restoration.
Mosa Meat is backed by investors such as Lowercarbon Capital, M Ventures, Invest-NL, Bell Food Group, PHW Group, LIOF, Nutreco, Mitsubishi Corporation, Leonardo DiCaprio and other leading investors.
