Barcelona-based SolarMente, a cleantech startup, announced on Tuesday, that actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio has joined their ranks as a new investor. However, there is no information about the exact funding figures.
The announcement comes over a year after raising a €50M investment from GNE Finance.
“Excited and honoured to share that Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the world’s biggest climate activists and actors, has partnered up with SolarMente to accelerate the Spanish energy transition. Meeting DiCaprio in person in Los Angeles was incredibly inspiring,” says Wouter Draijier, CEO of SolarMente.”
Solarmente: Democratising solar energy
Wouter Draijier, a Dutch engineer and YesDelft alumni settled in Barcelona, co-founded SolarMente in 2020 with Victor Gardrinier, a Canadian software developer.
Solarmente’s innovative subscription model removes the initial investment barrier, allowing users immediate access to solar energy’s benefits.
The subscription service includes the installation of solar panels and batteries, home electrification, and energy management.
Besides subscriptions, the Spanish company offers customers the ability to generate, store, and even sell their energy. It not only reduces electricity bills but also maximizes energy savings for the users.
Additionally, SolarMente provides optional add-ons to the subscription, including battery systems, electric vehicle charging points, and even a heat pump system.
Users can now store excess solar energy and share it with others through a virtual battery service, maximising cost savings and efficiency.
Since its inception, SolarMente has experienced exponential growth and has successfully initiated its expansion throughout the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
The company aims to install more than 10,000 photovoltaic systems in the coming years.
