Serverpod, a Swedish startup building the backbone of the Google-based Flutter framework, secured €1.7m in pre-seed funding. The round was led by the Danish venture house PreSeed Ventures’ fund PSV Tech01. With the fresh capital, the startup plans to quickly double their team and launch new services to the already popular product.
Flutter, Google’s cross-platform programming framework is taking over the world of app development with more than 6 million Flutter developers using the product. Strangely, this rapidly growing ecosystem still lacks a backend solution with the same level of appeal. But now Swedish-based startup Serverpod has arrived to fill this self-experienced gap with their take on a powerful backend framework.
The trio behind Serverpod are well-known names in the tech world. Viktor Lidholt, a former developer on the Flutter team at Google in Silicon Valley, Isak Dunér, former startup founder and CTO, and Alexander Sandor, former lead developer of Minecraft at Mojang. Their combined extensive experience is the foundation of Serverpod’s vision to build innovative developer tools.
Viktor Lidholt, the CEO of Serverpod, wrote his first code at age 12 and spent over a decade as a game developer and product designer in Sweden including a stint at Stardoll. In 2012, Viktor moved to Silicon Valley where he joined Google in 2015 as Senior Software Engineer on the newly founded Flutter project. With his front-row tickets and his first-hand involvement, Lidholt took part in redefining how apps are built and designed. Meanwhile, he was also quick to realize that the framework was missing a backend solution that could make the life of developers easier and their technical products even stronger.
“With our hosting service, we are removing yet another barrier to quickly bringing an app to market. With over 4500 developers and approximately 500 apps already built using Serverpod, we feel confident that we are filling in a significant gap in the market with Serverpod,” said co-founder and CEO, Viktor Lidholt.
Today, more than 6 million developers are using Flutter as their cross-platform framework to push more than 20% of all new apps in Google Play out – and the growth does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon. In September 2021, Serverpod was released as a full-blown solution, which has served the Flutter community well ever since. While some might have wished that Serverpod had entered the market way earlier, it seems as if they have arrived at the right place at the right time:
Serverpod is already helping developers to build better Flutter-based mobile apps faster and is set to accelerate efforts having recently secured €1.7 million in fresh funding.
“Throughout the years, Flutter has become a preferred framework to use for developing apps cross-platform. But for it to be fully scalable and for the apps to truly flourish, it needs a solid backend framework supporting the language. And that’s exactly what Serverpod is delivering,” commented GP of PSV Tech01, Alexander Viterbo-Horten.
