Hillegom-based Mama’s Maaltijden, a meal company, announced on Wednesday that it has acquired the vegan brand Vood, known for its high-quality plant-based products.
By acquiring Vood into its brand portfolio, Mama’s Maaltijden strengthens its presence in the ready-to-eat meal segment, particularly in the rapidly growing vegan market.
Additionally, Vood’s expertise in online sales is of great value to Mama’s Maaltijden and will contribute to the further improvement of the digital presence of the entire group.
The announcement comes eight months after raising €1M from Dragon Pieter Schoen and a successful launch of Fitmeals, a collaboration with XXL-Nutrition.
Fitmeals offers a range of ‘healthy, nutritious, and delicious’ meals for athletes and individuals striving for a wholesome lifestyle.
Founded by Myrthe van der Vlis and Maarten Gomes, Vood has experienced strong growth in recent years: the company has sold over 200,000 frozen ready-to-eat meals in a short period and raised €650K in funding from investors including Volve Capital, Shamrock Ventures, and other food industry investors.
“The acquisition by Mama’s Maaltijden leads to an immediate improvement in both the commercial and operational capabilities of Vood. This enables us to better execute our mission of encouraging people to eat more plant-based food by making it as accessible and delicious as possible,” says Gomes.
Mama’s Maaltijden: Freshly prepared meals, salads, and poké bowls
Founded in 2021, Mama’s Maaltijden is the brainchild of three entrepreneurs — Serdar Tolenaar, Rick Hageman, and Henk Brussaard with backgrounds in the supermarket industry.
The company offers freshly prepared meals, salads, and poké bowls.
Despite its relatively short two-year existence, the company claims that Mama’s Meals is already approaching a €10M turnover.
It’s products can be found in prominent retailers such as PLUS, Spar, Coop, Jan Linders, Boon, Versunie, and Getir.
About the acquisition, Tolenaar says, “We see that a brand strategy is of added value both online and offline in retail. With the brand’s Mama’s Maaltijden, Fitmeals, and Vood, we now have comprehensive coverage for the regular, athletic, and vegan demographics.”
