California-based Telltale, a narrative game development studio and publisher, announced on Thursday, August 11, that it has acquired London-based interactive video tech company Flavourworks for an undisclosed amount.
Telltale Games recently launched “The Expanse: A Telltale Series”, their first new game since their revival. The company says the release reflects their commitment to delivering captivating narrative games across different platforms and to wider audiences.
Both Telltale Games and Flavourworks are recipients of financial support from HIRO Capital, a Games and Metaverse Venture fund.
A blend of film and games
Founded in 2015 by Jack Attridge and Pavle Mihailovic, Flavourworks is a mobile-first studio specialising in cinematic interactive stories. The company introduced TouchVideo, a responsive video interaction technology.
TouchVideo is a patented engine and toolkit that combines film and gaming to create interactive videos for multi-platform distribution and monetisation. It allows audiences to interact with objects, characters, and story elements within filmed content.
Developed using advanced technology, TouchVideo blends game development and filmmaking techniques.
Flavourworks, known for its cinematic games like ERICA (PlayStation, Steam, iOS), Hush—Crane, and Cuttlefish (mobile), will see their CEO Zachary Slatter assume the role of Managing Director, Europe, within the Telltale management team.
Slatter says, “Telltale is the perfect partner to maximise the value of our proprietary TouchVideo games engine. They are the iconic narrative gaming brand, and we look forward to powering distribution of their games on new platforms, as well as tapping their creative and publishing resources to elevate our own original IP development.”
Aim of this acquisition
Flavourworks offers interactive streaming technology and a games engine that provide visually captivating and immersive gameplay experiences on touchscreens, SmartTVs, PCs, and gaming consoles.
Jamie Ottilie, Telltale CEO, says, “Fans today want to interact with their favourite IPs more deeply, and interactive narratives are a really immersive way to do that. At the same time, people want to access their games from wherever they are, regardless of device or platform.”
“Flavourworks’ technology and interactive video expertise will enable us to efficiently create story-based games and reach more people through streaming and new platforms. We’re excited about what it could mean for our portfolio of games,” adds Ottilie.
Telltale is a developer and publisher of narrative games across various platforms, known for its episodic approach. LCG Entertainment acquired Telltale’s brand, assets, and various IP operating games under the Telltale name. LCG Entertainment is a private company in Malibu, with offices in Corte Madera, California.
Telltale aims to collaborate with compatible studios and technologies for impactful narrative experiences. The acquisition of Flavourworks underscores their shared understanding of film and gaming convergence, positioning both companies to thrive in the evolving media landscape.
