Last year saw more than 240,000 roles leaving the industry globally as many tech giants shaved their workforce throughout the year. And while the outlook seems uncertain for 2024 – a recent report revealed that only 20% of European tech companies will hire in the next six months – it’s not all doom and gloom.
Europe’s tech sector has always been underpinned by a strong and growing VC network. European VCs have increased the amount of capital raised by 100x in the last 20 years, and despite economic uncertainty, there is still significant dry powder.
Sectors in which Europe has historically been strong are areas such as fintech, digital health and climate tech, which look set to grow even further in 2024. So opportunities are waiting on the horizon.
Predict future careers
In the rapidly evolving world of technology, it can be difficult to predict which careers will be the most in-demand in the future. Right now experts agree that European tech startups will focus increasingly on their core services and hire more front-end developers, DevOps engineers and blockchain developers.
Similarly, digital companies will look for PHP developers, web developers and digital marketing managers. SaaS-based startups in the EU will focus on building next-gen products and user privacy, which is why they’re predicted to hire more product managers, customer success managers and security engineers.
Deloitte’s Tech Trends Report for the year sheds further light on anticipated job trends within the tech landscape, including opportunities in the industrial metaverse and generative AI, with big data analytics being a main driver of job growth over the next five years.
Spatial technologies within the industrial domain also present promising job prospects in the coming year, with roles in digital twins, spatial simulation and augmented work instructions on the rise.
Additionally, jobs in AI model engineering, interaction design, AI content creation, data curation, and governance specialists are all anticipated to rise. According to the report, data science and analytics will be one of the most sought-after fields in European tech, with a growing demand for professionals (data scientists, engineers, architects and machine learning engineers) who can analyse and interpret large amounts of data to drive business decisions.
Soft skills matter
While adaptability to changing preferences and genuine enthusiasm for learning and experimenting remains crucial for tech workers moving forward in 2024, the report also highlights the importance of soft skills, with a growing demand for professionals who possess strong communication, problem-solving and leadership abilities.
If you’re serious about positioning yourself for success in an ever-changing world of tech, it’s time to explore new ambitious career paths that also offer you cracking learning opportunities.
